She also wrote "Sisterhood," about an African-American sorority, and the "Empire" trilogy, which was inspired by her childhood growing up in London. The novels won her numerous awards, including the Independent's Book of the Year Award for "The Other Side." Her latest book is "The Forgotten Woman," which tells the story of an African-American girl who grew up in segregation in Virginia in the 1930s.
